Fire Safety Visit October 2007

On Sunday, October 14, there was a special Children's Sermon about heros.  Ted spoke about our everyday real life heros like parents, doctors, police and fire fighters.  To help with the talk, several volunteers from the Montverde Fire Department were on hand to talk with the children.  Ted then talked about the most important hero ever - Jesus.  He discussed how Jesus saved each of us from the sin we commit every day and how we can look up to him as much as we do our other daily heros.

Following the Children's Sermon, all the kids (including some over the age of 30...) went outside for a Fire Safety demonstration by the volunteers.  The children were instructed on the importance of home fire safety followed by a demonstration of the many types of equipment the firemen use. The firemen then joined the congregation in the Cox Fellowship Hall to enjoy MUMC's, monthly, covered dish dinner. This was a terrific sermon and learning experience for the kids!

Kids of all ages are welcome at MUMC. MUMC now has two Sunday School classes to cater to all age groups.

Hero's Children's Moment

Good morning everyone!

Today, we’re going to talk about heroes.

What is a hero?

That’s right. A hero is defined as: “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities”.

Who can give me an example of a hero?

Don’t you think we could call that person an everyday hero?

Today, we have a real everyday hero for you to meet. This is Fireman Noel Fetters and he is with the Montverde Fire Department. After we finish children’s moment, Fireman Noel is going to take all of you outside to show you a real  fire engine and all of the tools an everyday hero uses. You will also get a chance to talk about being a fireman and what it feels like to faithfully serve others. Fireman Noel will also be joining us, after church, for covered dish dinner.

Then what is a “Super Hero”?

When we think of a superhero, we normally think of Batman, Super Man or Spider Man. They all look normal in real life, but they can magically change into a super hero with super powers.

What make a “Super Hero” different from an “Everyday Hero”?

Are Super Heroes real?

Can everyday heroes do all the “magical” things that superheroes do?

I know one Superhero who is very real...His name is Jesus.

All the superheroes we mentioned are make believe and do all their good deed by using “magical or imaginary” powers.  But Jesus is real and he uses real powers given to him by God.

Just like the superheroes, Jesus looked very “normal”, in fact that’s why many people didn’t believe he was a king. But one day on the mountain top he changed. He did things we expect a super hero would do.

The bible says in Mark 9:2 that Jesus took Peter, James and John up onto a high mountain where he transfigured before them. And his raiment (which means his clothes) became shining, exceeding white as snow. Doesn’t that sounds just like the type of thing a make believe super hero would do?

So you see, not all super heroes are made up. Isn’t it great to know we have a super hero watching out for us.

I don’t know about you, but I sure am glad that we have everyday heroes like Fireman Noel to keep us safe from harm. But, I’m even more grateful that  Jesus, the only real super hero  is not made up, but is there for us always and forever. Isn’t that great?

PRAYER

Father God. Thank you for watching out for us and for all the protection you provide. Thank you for Fireman Noel and all the other everyday heroes who selflessly give of themselves to protect all those who glorify You . Thank you for Your Son Jesus, may we live by His example and become a superhero in Your eyes.

Amen
